Transcript

My name is Stan Papoulias and I’ve been working in Higher Education for 25 years now: the first 10 in hourly paid contracts, then for another 2 in fixed term contracts, and then I had a permanent job as a lecturer in media and cultural studies. I was made redundant in 2011, and since then I’ve been back on fixed term contracts. My current one ends in September. My position is not unique—far from it.

I’ll be voting for Jo Grady for General Secretary because she understands that the first duty of the union is to end job precarity and workload creep, which together destroy our ability to think and to teach and to function. Jo has my vote because she recognises that mental ill health can be an industrial injury.

Jo is determined to say no to marketisation, no to the deterioration of our working conditions, no to the toxic proliferation of metrics and league tables and performance management, no to the making of university staff into state informants and border patrol.

With Jo Grady for General Secretary, I know we can make a difference. We can get together to create a union of the rank-and-file, for the rank-and-file. This is the union we need, and this is the union we deserve.
